The separators used in oil and gas industry are pressure vessels used for separating a raw mixture extracted from wells into liquid and gas components. These separators may be installed in either an onshore or offshore processing platform. Depending upon the configurations, the separators may be of three different types - horizontal, vertical, or spherical separators.

Based on their different types of functions, the separators may be classified as a test separator, primary phase separator, high-pressure separator, deliquidizer, low-pressure separator, etc. Some of the separators are uniquely designed to suit the needs of specific applications and such oil/gas separators are known as degasser or deliquidizer. The deliquidizers are used to separate the isolated droplets from a bulk gas stream.

In most of the oil and natural gas filtration processes, the separators are the first vessel that the raw material flows through after leaving the well.
